ForwardLife Long Learning Knowledge Assessment Course: Geriatric Urology: Basic Principles for Urologic Practice Webcast (2018)
This course will provide an introduction to some of the basic concepts of geriatrics required for evaluation and management of the elderly urology patient. Presentations are designed to be of benefit for both the practicing urologist and the urology resident-in-training. Specific subjects to be covered, based on peer-reviewed literature and on specialty society guidelines (American Geriatrics Society), will include: Additional steps in the initial evaluation of the elderly patient to evaluate for common geriatric conditions that may affect urologic care such as delirium, dementia, depression, falls and gait disorders, and cardiovascular diseases; Alterations in the determination of need for additional evaluation and/or recommendations for treatment; and Decisions on definitive therapy for specific conditions including urinary tract infection and bacteriuria, urologic malignancies, palliative and end-of-life care and pain management, and catheter management. Case-based examples will be used to highlight illustrated principles.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe the fundamental components of functional and cognitive assessment of older adults with an emphasis on surgical decision making for elderly urologic patients.
- Identify the major geriatric syndromes and explain how these impact urologic health in older adults.
- Develop strategies to enhance the efficiency of the office evaluation of the elderly urologic patient to include functional and multisystem clinical assessments which may influence urologic care.
- Utilize support personnel and facilities designed to aid the geriatric patient in gaining high-level quality of life regardless of disease state or severity.
- Discuss practical strategies for evaluation and management of common urologic conditions in older adults including urinary tract infection, hematuria, urinary retention, urologic cancers, and chronic catheter care.
