COMPLIMENTARY INTERACTIVE LECTURE SERIES FOR AUA MEMBERS!

 

The Gearing Up For Residency Series is an exciting new educational initiative, a series of four virtual sessions including case studies for incoming urology trainees to prepare for intern year. Led by Course Directors Dr. Sammy Elsamra and Dr. Alexandra Tabakin, this lecture series explores an array of topics impacting today's residents, including:

  • How to be successful as an intern inside and outside of the hospital 
  • Clinical content for interns 
  • Learn valuable study tips for the in-service exam and surgical cases

This series separated into four interactive webinars:

Day One: Intern Life 101 (60 mins); October 5, 2021, 8:00pm - 9:00pm ET

Day Two: Introduction to the Floors (60 mins); October 12, 2021, 8:00pm - 9:00pm ET

Day Three: Urology 101 (60 mins); October 19, 2021, 8:00pm - 9:00pm ET

Day Four: Cases in Urology (90 mins); October 26, 2021, 7:30pm - 9:00pm ET

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

Day One: Intern Life 101

  1. Identify psychosocial challenges they may encounter during intern year
  2. Develop strategies for finding mentors during residency
  3. Optimize time management, physical/mental health, and work life balance
  4. Locate helpful resources from the AUA and other sources to prepare for the urology in-service examination and surgical cases
  5. Recall psychosocial challenges they may encounter during intern year
  6. Recognize how and when to ask for help when struggling in residency
  7. Develop strategies for soliciting feedback
  8. Identify characteristics and habits of stand-out residents

Day Two: Introduction to the Floors

  1. Identify a differential diagnosis for common post-operative problems including postoperative pain and fever, hypotension, oliguria, SOB, chest pain, and hyperkalemia
  2. Develop a sound workup for common post-operative problems
  3. Discuss the management and treatment plan for common post-operative problems
  4. Determine when to call a senior resident or attending for common post-operative problems
  5. Identify the different types of foley catheters and scenarios in which to use them
  6. Develop strategies for troubleshooting difficult foley placement
  7. Recognize the indications for and how to perform suprapubic tube placement
  8. Evaluate and manage gross and microscopic hematuria and clot retention
  9. Determine when to initiate continuous bladder irrigation

Day Three: Urology 101

  1. Identify common urologic emergencies including, obstructing urolithiasis with infection, acute scrotum, priapism, Fournier’s gangrene, paraphimosis, penile fracture, and renal trauma
  2. Discuss the differential diagnosis of common urologic emergencies
  3. Perform a proper work up and successfully manage common urologic emergencies
  4. Determine when to call a senior resident or attending for help for common urologic emergencies

Day Four: Cases in Urology

  1. Use clinical vignettes to work through common patient care scenarios
  2. Organize a diagnosis and treatment plan for common patient care scenarios with other members of the team
  3. Develop a rapport with other urology interns and residents across the country
